– 19th-century fortification with walking trails

Prepare for a journey through time and an encounter with the power of history! Boyen Fortress in Giżycko is not only the most important monument of the city but also one of the best-preserved 19th-century fortifications in Poland and a true gem of military architecture. This huge complex, picturesquely situated on the isthmus between the Niegocin and Kisajno lakes, bears witness to the turbulent history of East Prussia and is a place that fascinates with its scale, history, and atmosphere.

A fortress of strategic importance

Built between 1843-1855 at the initiative of King Frederick William IV, Boyen Fortress was meant to be a key point in the defense of the eastern borders of Prussia. Named after the Prussian Minister of War, Hermann von Boyen, it played an important strategic role, especially during World War I, when it successfully resisted Russian troops in 1914. Its massive fortifications and strategic location made it difficult to capture.

Walk around a gigantic star

Visiting Boyen Fortress mainly means a walk across a huge area (about 100 hectares!) designed in the shape of an irregular star. You can explore here for hours:

  • Massive earthen ramparts and walls: Offering a sense of the scale of the defensive structure.
  • Bastions: Characteristic extended defense points (named after the generals von Boyen: Leopold, Ludwig, Hermann as well as Recht, Licht, Schwert).
  • Historic gates: Like the Giżycko, Kętrzyn, or Water Gates, each with a unique character.
  • Dry moats: Surrounding the main core of the fortress.

A walk around the fortress is like a journey to another era, allowing you to feel the spirit of times past.

What lies inside the fortress?

Many historic buildings have survived on the Boyen Fortress grounds, which once bustled with military life. It is worth visiting the accessible buildings where interesting museum exhibitions and galleries are often housed. You can see former barracks, stables, gunsmith workshops, powder laboratories, and bakeries. Exhibitions often concern the history of the fortress itself, military equipment, World War I in Masuria, as well as local history and art.

Boyen Fortress actively

The fortress is not just a static monument. Its vast area is an excellent place for long walks, Nordic walking, or even cycling on designated paths. Moreover, Boyen Fortress often becomes a venue for outdoor cultural events, such as concerts, festivals, motorcycle rallies, or spectacular historical reenactments. Be sure to check the events calendar before your visit!

How to plan your visit?

  • Location: The fortress is located west of the strict center of Giżycko. From Hotel Wodnik, you can reach it by a longer, pleasant walk (about 20-30 minutes) or by car/taxi in a few minutes.
  • Time: It is worth allocating at least 2-3 hours for sightseeing, and if you want to thoroughly browse the exhibitions and walk around the entire area – even more.
  • Tickets and Hours: Entrance to the fortress grounds is paid. Opening hours may vary depending on the season – it is best to check them before your visit on the official website.
  • Facilities: There is usually a catering point and a souvenir shop operating on the fortress grounds.

Why is Boyen Fortress a must-see in Giżycko?

Because it is a unique place in many respects: enormous scale, well-preserved military architecture, fascinating history linked to Europe's fate, interesting exhibitions, and the possibility of active leisure. Visiting Boyen Fortress is a must on the itinerary for anyone who really wants to get to know Giżycko and its heritage.
