on the Sapina or Krutynia river

Masuria is not only endless lakes and the breeze in the sails. It is also picturesque rivers winding through forests, meadows, and charming villages, offering a completely different perspective and close contact with nature. A kayaking trip is one of the most enjoyable forms of active relaxation in the region, accessible to almost everyone. And Giżycko, thanks to its central location and developed tourist infrastructure, is an excellent base for organizing unforgettable kayaking adventures, especially on two extremely popular rivers: Sapina and Krutynia.

Why is it worth kayaking in Masuria?

  • Close to nature: When kayaking, you are right by the water, surrounded by greenery, with the chance to observe birds and other wildlife.
  • Peace and relaxation: Rhythmic paddling, silence broken only by birdsong and the sound of water – an excellent way to reset and escape everyday noise.
  • Activity for everyone: Most popular Masurian kayaking routes are relatively easy and safe, ideal even for beginners and families with children.
  • A different perspective: Seeing the landscape from the river level is a completely different experience than walking or cycling.

Sapina River – a picturesque route near Giżycko

Are you looking for a beautiful kayaking route that is not as crowded as Krutynia, yet is relatively close to Giżycko? Choose the Sapina River! This charming route, flowing north of the Mamry lake complex (starting, for example, near Kruklanki), offers great landscape diversity. You will paddle through picturesque lakes (including Gołdapiwo, Wilkus, Pozezdrze, Stręgiel) as well as dense forests. The route is interesting, sometimes a bit more challenging than Krutynia (possible faster currents, natural obstacles), but provides plenty of satisfaction and beautiful views. It’s a great option for a one-day trip organized from Giżycko.

Krutynia River – the queen of Masurian kayaking trips

This route probably needs no introduction. The Krutynia River, flowing through the heart of the Masurian Landscape Park (south of Giżycko), is considered one of the most beautiful kayaking routes in Europe. It is famous for its incredibly clean, clear water, gentle current (ideal for beginners and families), stunning, often pristine landscapes of the Piska Forest, and rich fauna and flora. Although reaching the popular starting points (e.g., the village of Krutyń) requires a longer trip from Giżycko (about 1-1.5 hours drive), the views and experiences make up for everything. During peak season, it can be crowded, but the magic of Krutynia still works! Trips are usually organized on selected sections lasting a few hours.

How to organize a kayaking trip from Giżycko?

Organizing a river trip usually requires some logistics, but it is not complicated:

  1. Choosing the route: Decide whether you prefer the closer and more diverse Sapina, or the famous, gentle Krutynia. Adjust the length and difficulty of the section to your abilities and time.
  2. Rental and transport: Many companies operate in Giżycko and the nearby area specializing in organizing kayaking trips. They offer equipment rental (kayaks, paddles, life jackets) and, importantly, transport for participants and kayaks to the starting point and pick-up from the end of the trip. Contact the reception of Hotel Wodnik, which will help you choose the best company.
  3. Booking: Especially in the summer season, it is advisable to book kayaks and transport in advance.

What to take on a kayaking trip?

  • Waterproof bag or case for phone, documents, keys.
  • Drinking water and snacks.
  • Sun protection (sunscreen, hat, sunglasses).
  • Swimsuit (if you plan to swim) and/or quick-drying clothes.
  • Towel and change of clothes (just in case).
  • Insect repellent against mosquitoes and ticks.
  • Comfortable footwear that can get wet (e.g., sandals, water shoes).

Feel the magic of Masurian rivers!

A kayaking trip is a fantastic way to spend an active day, enjoy close contact with unspoiled nature, and discover Masuria from a completely new perspective. Whether you choose the picturesque Sapina or the legendary Krutynia, you will experience an unforgettable adventure.
