- in the Giżycko area – explore the Masuria actively

Masuria is not just water! Although the Land of the Great Masurian Lakes is famous for sailing and water sports, it also offers fantastic conditions for cycling and hiking enthusiasts. The surroundings of Giżycko are rich with picturesque routes leading through lakes, forests, and fields, allowing close contact with nature and active discovery of the region's charms. Whether you prefer two wheels, a brisk walk with poles, or a peaceful stroll – you will find something for yourself here, and Giżycko is an excellent base to start your adventure.

By bike through the Land of the Great Masurian Lakes – the best cycling routes

Giżycko and its surroundings are a true paradise for cyclists. Here awaits you:

Masurian Bicycle Loop (MPR) – the queen of Masurian cycling trails

This is the region's flagship project – over 300 km of well-prepared and signposted cycling route, partly passing through Giżycko or its immediate vicinity. You can choose a shorter or longer section of the Masurian Bicycle Loop, enjoying a comfortable ride (many parts are separated bike paths or roads with low traffic) and beautiful views. It's a great option for a full-day trip.

Scenic loop around Lake Niegocin

One of the most popular local routes. The circling of Lake Niegocin is several dozen kilometers (the length may vary depending on the chosen variant) leading along asphalt roads, as well as forest and field paths. The route offers wonderful views of the lake, allows visiting nearby towns (e.g., Wilkasy), and is a good challenge for intermediate cyclists.

Forest paths and peaceful asphalts

Off-road cycling lovers will find many forest tracks and paths in the City Forest or towards the Borecka Forest (for more advanced trips). Meanwhile, road bike enthusiasts can discover charming, less-traveled asphalt roads meandering through Masurian fields and villages around Giżycko.

Bike rentals in Giżycko

You don't have to bring your own bike! Several rental shops operate in Giżycko, offering various types of bikes (city, trekking, mountain, sometimes electric), making it easier to plan a spontaneous cycling trip. Ask at the reception of Hotel Wodnik - we'll help!

On foot or with poles – hiking and Nordic Walking trails

If you prefer to explore the world on your own feet, Giżycko will not disappoint you either:

Relaxing walks along the lake shore

Promenade along Niegocin, the pathway along the Giżycko (Łuczański) Canal, or trails around nearby smaller lakes are perfect places for easy, relaxing walks with beautiful views, available directly from the town center.

Historical routes of the Boyen Fortress

The Boyen Fortress area is not only a history lesson but also a vast area (about 100 ha) with numerous alleys and paths, ideal for a long, interesting walk among historic fortifications.

Forest hikes within reach

Need contact with the forest? Go to the City Forest right next to Giżycko or for longer hikes on the marked PTTK hiking trails, which run through surrounding forests and along lakes (it is advisable to get a map).

Nordic Walking – health and beautiful views

Many of the mentioned hiking routes – both lakeside and forest – are perfect for practicing Nordic Walking. Walking with poles in the beautiful Masurian scenery is a great way to improve fitness and relax.

Planning active leisure – what to know?

  • Always check route maps (paper or mobile applications).
  • Choose a route suitable for your fitness and skills.
  • Remember about appropriate clothing and footwear.
  • Pack water, snacks, a charged phone, and possibly a basic first aid kit/repair kit for the bike.
  • Respect nature and follow trail signs.

Why is Giżycko a great base for active travelers?

Because it offers an incredible variety of routes and activities available almost at your fingertips! You can start the day with a walk by the lake, in the afternoon take a bike loop around Niegocin, and the next day set off on a longer forest trail hike. Giżycko’s central location, availability of equipment rentals, and good tourist infrastructure make it an ideal place for everyone who wants to actively explore the beauty of Masuria.
